Graveyard Keeper 2 Plague Doctor — How to Unlock the Cell and the Alchemy Branch

Published 2026-09-236 min read

How to unlock the Plague Doctor in Graveyard Keeper 2: meet Bali at the tavern, raise her friendship to 10, have skeleton Gerry open the east corridor, and clear the rubble with a second toolbox.

The Plague Doctor sits in a barred cell beneath your house, and he is the gatekeeper of Graveyard Keeper 2's entire anatomy and alchemy branch: Dreamdust, the Astrologer's Tower laboratory, and the resurrection tech that produces more zombies all sit downstream of him. Reaching him isn't a puzzle — it's a checklist, and one friendship number is the step most players miss.

Quick answer

Meet Bali at the village tavern (introduced by Januarius at the counter), raise Bali's friendship to at least 10, then talk to skeleton Gerry at your house to open the basement's east corridor.

What the Plague Doctor unlocks

He is the entry point of the anatomy and alchemy part of the tech tree. Everything downstream — Dreamdust production, the alchemy laboratory in the Astrologer's Tower, and the resurrection technology that lets you craft more zombies — requires him first. If your tech tree has stalled on that side, this cell is why.

The conditions, before the cell opens

Condition Where Detail
Quest chain active Quest log "Good Fellow", "What Is a Fairy?", "Dust in the Kitchen"
Meet Bali Village tavern Introduced by Januarius at the counter
Friendship level Bali At least 10
Basement corridor Home base Skeleton Gerry unlocks the east side
Toolbox Crafting Bronze parts + wooden planks

"Good Fellow" states the goal outright: summoning the fairy requires Dreamdust, and Dreamdust requires the dungeon and the Plague Doctor. "Dust in the Kitchen" runs alongside it. If those entries aren't in your log yet, keep pushing the main story — the cell won't open early.

The route down to the cell

  1. Find the hatch first. It's in the back room of your house and drops you into the writing basement. A staircase inside leads back up — the route works in both directions.
  2. If the hatch is sealed, craft a toolbox (bronze parts + wooden planks) and use it there. That means unlocking basic woodworking and bronze working before you descend.
  3. Head to the tavern. Leave the churchyard and go east toward the village; the road from your base runs straight there if you need the map.
  4. Talk to Januarius at the tavern counter. He introduces you to Bali. This introduction is mandatory — not optional flavor.
  5. Raise Bali's friendship to at least 10. Below that number the chain's dialogue simply won't trigger. This is the single most common place players get stuck.
  6. Run back west to your base and talk to skeleton Gerry. He's the one who opens the basement area beyond the writing room.
  7. Take the hatch down again and head east through the newly opened corridor. At its end stands the barred cell — and a cutscene plays when you arrive.

Clear the rubble (bring a second toolbox)

Seeing the Plague Doctor isn't the same as unlocking him. He's pinned under rubble and can't be talked to properly until it's cleared — which costs a second toolbox.

Craft both toolboxes before you descend: one for the hatch, one for the rubble. The round trip back to a workbench eats a huge chunk of an in-game day.

Confirming the unlock

You did it right when the dialogue triggers after the rubble clears and the Astrologer's Tower at your base becomes usable. Leave your house and head north to find it, open it with the badge and the items already in your inventory, and check that:

  • The tower's research table and lab workbench are now interactive.
  • The quest log advances to producing Dreamdust for him.

The very next step is the Dreamdust itself: research one green item and one blue item at the research table — blood and water are the easiest pair — combine them at the lab workbench, and deliver the result. Curing his cough opens the cellar beneath the laboratory and hands you your first two zombies. Our zombie workers guide picks up from there.
