Graveyard Keeper 2 Sanity — How to Lower the Purple Meter That Caps Your Energy

Published 2026-09-236 min read

How to lower sanity (the purple meter) in Graveyard Keeper 2: sleep while sleep-deprived for the biggest cut, beer at −12, berry pie at −3, and the skills that reduce sanity directly.

Sanity in Graveyard Keeper 2 never causes hallucinations or visual glitches — it just quietly shrinks your energy bar. The purple meter next to the blue energy bar, top-left of the HUD, fills up from corpse work and long shifts, and eats into the maximum energy you can hold. If food suddenly seems useless, this meter is usually why.

Quick answer

Sleep in your bed while the blue Zz icon is showing for the single biggest reduction. For smaller top-ups between tasks, buy beer from the tavern innkeeper or eat baked goods like berry pie.

What the purple meter actually does

Sanity doesn't debuff your character directly — it caps your energy. As the purple meter fills, it occupies part of the energy bar, lowering the maximum you can hold. A keeper who used to work a full blue bar now tops out far lower, so meals that used to refill most of the bar "waste" everything above the cap.

It rises from three things: handling corpses and performing autopsies, long stretches of crafting or labor at workstations, and going too long without sleep. Running low on energy also makes sanity climb faster — which is how players fall into the loop of eating cheap mushrooms, working, and wondering why nothing recovers properly anymore.

Every way to lower it, compared

Method Sanity Energy Where
Sleep while sleep-deprived Large fixed cut Full restore Your bed at home
Beer −12 +52 (tooltip) Tavern innkeeper
Berry pie −3 +30 Kitchen oven
Other baked goods −3 to −5 Varies Kitchen oven

Sleeping is the only method that clears a big meter in one action; everything else chips away. Pie and beer are fine for early-stage buildup — if the purple has already swallowed half your bar, they won't be enough on their own.

Sleep — the big lever

Sleep only reduces sanity when the keeper is genuinely sleep-deprived — the blue circular Zz icon at the top of the screen, which appears after roughly two in-game days without sleep, usually with a sound cue. Walk home, stand at the bed, take the sleep prompt, and sleep through the night: energy fully restores and a substantial chunk of sanity disappears.

The catch: sleep removes a fixed amount, not the whole meter. If purple already covers half the bar, some survives the night — and if you sleep without the Zz icon active, you restore energy but the purple doesn't move, spending in-game time for half the benefit.

Beer — the expensive emergency button

Buy beer from Heradim, the innkeeper at the village tavern. Its use tooltip reads −12 sanity, +52 energy, making it the strongest single consumable against the purple meter — ideal mid-task when you can't afford hours of sleep.

The problem is money. Every beer costs coin, and you can't brew your own early on, so leaning on beer turns sanity management into a running expense. Treat it as an emergency measure, not a routine — and note that the fatigue-focused writeups still warn that alcohol works against your energy cap in the long run.

Pies — the sustainable answer

Baked goods are the long-term fix. Berry pie removes 3 sanity and restores 30 energy, and the oven turns 4 dough + 6 berries into four pies at once. Other oven recipes like croissants land in the −3 to −5 range, so hover each recipe and check which cuts deepest before committing materials.

Keeping the pipeline running takes a little farming: grow wheat, grind it into flour, make dough, and keep the kitchen's firewood rack fueled. Berries are free and plentiful — three bushes near your house and five more around the village — so pick every bush you pass. Once pies come off the line in batches, you can work long days without the meter ever becoming a problem. Cook several dishes back-to-back and eat them consecutively so the reductions stack in one sitting instead of trickling between tasks.

Why it keeps rising: the sleep-deprivation multiplier

The Zz debuff is the real accelerant. While it's active, every task drains extra energy and pushes sanity higher than it would otherwise climb. Fighting the meter with pie after every action costs more food than it saves — finish the task, then sleep the moment the icon appears.

Skills that reduce sanity

Some skills cut sanity directly — Butcher's Son is one of them — so when allocating points, read skill descriptions for sanity effects, not just gather-speed numbers. Others describe their activity as "relaxing" (lumberjack, carpenter, blacksmith); in the demo those descriptions didn't translate into measurable reductions, so don't build a sanity strategy around them.

Confirming it worked

Watch the top-left corner: the purple portion visibly shrinks and the blue bar fills higher than before. If a meal now pushes energy near full where it used to stop short, your ceiling has recovered. A deeply purple bar takes several in-game days of disciplined sleep and food to drain — it won't reset in one rest, but stop feeding it with all-nighters at the morgue and it comes down on its own schedule.
